Shopping Areas

Portland's main shopping area is Downtown, between S.W. 2nd and 12th avenues and between Burnside and S.W. Madison streets. The major department stores are scattered over several blocks near Pioneer Courthouse Square. Nob Hill, northwest of downtown along N.W. 21st and 23rd avenues, has eclectic clothing, gift, book, and food shops, with a mix of chain and one-of-a-kind businesses. The stylish, upscale Pearl District, north from Burnside Street to around Overton Street between N.W. 8th and 15th avenues, abounds with haute clothiers, design shops, and art galleries. Hawthorne Boulevard, especially between 30th and 50th avenues, has long been a hub of alternative bookstores, coffeehouses, vintage stores, and funky boutiques. Over the past 10 to 15 years, nearby southeast neighborhoods, including the Central East Side, and the blocks where East Burnside Street meets 28th Avenue have also become repositories of similarly intriguing, independently operated stores, as have the hipster-favored Alberta and Mississippi districts to the north. The far southeast Sellwood neighborhood isn’t quite the antiques hub that it was historically, but you’ll still find some good spots here selling vintage furniture and collectibles, plus a few modern boutiques and cafés.
