TRAVEL TIPS

Hours of Operation

Shops and other businesses tend to keep later hours in New York City and its suburbs than in rural areas.

Banks are usually open weekdays 9–3 and sometimes Saturday morning. Post offices are generally open weekdays 8–5 and often on Saturday morning.

Most major museums and attractions are open daily or six days a week (with Monday the most likely closed day). Hours are often shorter on Saturday and especially Sunday. Some prominent museums, especially in New York City, stay open late one or two nights a week, usually Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. New York's less populous areas have quite a few smaller museums and sights that open only a few days a week, and sometimes only by appointment in the off-season.

Shops in urban and suburban areas, particularly in malls, typically open at 9 or 10 am daily and stay open until anywhere from 6 to 10 pm on weekdays and Saturday, and until 5 or 6 pm on Sunday.
